Branding Yourself With Colors

The art of branding is very dynamic. There is no one specific thing or task you need to focus on. Branding yourself entails distinguishing yourself and raising awareness about yourself, product or service. Always think about what represents your business and implement those elements by branding. As many marketers say, "Find out what your fans or clients like, and give it to them on purpose".  From signs, to images and designs, there are a few different ways to stand out in a way that coincides with your brand. Consistency is an important element of branding.

Using Colors To Brand Your Business

The psychology of color as it relates to brands is both a dynamic as well as controversial topic in marketing. Many say that often times, color resonates with personal experiences, while others point out that the effect of color in persuasion is not universal, meaning color has different connotations in different cultures. In retrospect, feelings and responses to certain stimuli is also not universal when it comes down to how well we relate.

With that being said, colors can impact mood and impression. For instance, when you see an artist such as Lil Thony driving a red Audi, your immediate impression might be that he is young and flashy with a sports car mentality. On another note, if you see a person driving a blue Grand Prix, you may look at this individual as more reserved. Remember, everything visible will have a brand connotation associated with it. If your product, brand or company is built on fun and excitement, I would suggest use bright colors that puts your viewers in a bright mood such as light green, or pink. Think about personality, and core values to find the perfect color to match your brand.

Additional FACTS Relevant to Branding and Colors

According to a recent case study, 90% of snap judgement made about a product is based on color. Also according to research, purchasing behavior is greatly affected by colors because of the impact they have on brand perception. When consumers make purchasing decision, they are more likely to buy from brands they recognize rather than an unfamiliar brand. Keep this in mind when it comes to remaining consistent and going the extra mile to ensure your brand is recognized and relevant. Also keep in mind the competition used by many of your competitors. If the industry standard "norm" is orange, you may want to consider using a color such as purple to stand out among competition.

According to psychologist and professor  Jennifer Aaker, there are five elements that play a role in brand personality. Those elements are excitement, competence, sincerity, sophistication, and ruggedness. Most brands either match one or two of the traits. Most studies suggest that it is more important for your brands color to match personality, rather than using a color in alignment of the stereotypical connotation associated with that color. Of course designs, symbols, and product will play an additional role in the branding process. Whether you are a dancer, musician, publicist, or lawyer, always be aware of the concept of branding and where your business stands in regards to that concept. Always keep in mind also that it is never too early to start branding yourself. Always stand out, be relevant, be consistent, and protect what you want your image to stand for!

What is Your Brand?

On the path to entrepreneurship, one of the questions you will continuously hear is "What is Your Brand". By definition, your brand can be described as the image, design, or feature that you provide that separates your product and service from that of a competitor. This represents the consistent image and perception that you give off to others. As an entrepreneur, artist, or freelance consultant, you will have to identify your personal brand so that you can carve your niche market, and coordinate your efforts to fit the needs of those that needs your goods and services the most. Your brand signifies why consumers love or dislike you based on past experiences. Always focus on building your brand while protecting your overall brand image.

Be Professional

When it comes down to building a solid brand, always make sure you analyze your competition and evaluate what you think helps their brand stand out. Always remember that quality will reflect brand perception. Consumers evaluate the smallest factors when estimating value. The more people respect your brand as superior, the more business you will get and the more people will be willing to pay for your value. For instance, an artist that has a professional image attached to their brand will have a less difficult time getting booked for paid gigs. For instance, if a booking agent contacts a venue and is able to send the decision maker professional quality photos along with a professional bio, videos, and music links with quility recordings, then this artist or band will more likely have more opportunites to get booked and paid over an independent artist who contacts a venue with mediocre photos and video footage, no bio or EPK, and music that sounds like it was recorded on garage band. People have to take you seriously if they want to do business with you, whether you pan on being a DJ, publicist, or any type of freelance professional. Consider getting promotional material such as flyers and business cards to help give your business a professional look.

Identifying Your Brand

When identifying your brand, you must be precise and specific. Find out what you, or your business represents and use that to speak directly to your audience. This can go as far as certain colors you feel represent your brand, certain symbols and images, the principles that guide your brand, and event behavioral characteristics that coincide with your brand. For instance, mogul T.I.P could be branded as a hustler (Grand Hustle Ent), gangster rapper, and actor from Atlanta, Ga. This brand is recognized by consistency and can be identified back when his 1st album was released. Another would be how Whiz Khalifa embraces the stoner lifestyle and Lil Thony boasts about living the lifestyle as a "player". The three mentioned above identified what they where known for, and embraced this to the fans that relate to their brand.

Once you know who you are and what your fans want from you, you are now ready to build your brand. As an entrepreneur always consider using symbols and logos to brand your business. Create something that will stand out and represent your business identity. You want your brand to be noticeable and distinguished. Think about when you watch a Progressive Insurance commercial or an AT&T commercial. As soon as the commercial comes on, the colors or music used in the advertisement will give you some indication to what company your looking at. Advertisers know how important branding is with 15 second radio and television commercials. The human attention span is very short, meaning you have to make your brand stand out to get noticed. Remember that your brand image and professionalism will indicate the value your brand provides. Always aim to brand yourself, even if you are working with another company.

Branding Yourself on Instagram

Branding yourself is important no matter what industry you are competing in. The better you brand yourself or your business, the more sustainability you will have. In other words, the stronger your brand, the more you value it holds. Always focus on learning how to add value to your brand.

Branding Yourself with Social media

There is an ever increasing challenge to maintain a strong brand presence in the marketplace. Sales, marketing, and advertising expertise is highly needed, especially in the entertainment industry. In addition, social media has become popular for big and small businesses and advertisers as well. Many social media consultant firms such as Bamconcepts LLC have emerged to assist businesses and individuals with strategic branding and sales tactics to outpace their competition. Even if you do not have the budget to pay a firm to handle your social media accounts, always make sure that your posts and interactions online correspond with the brand identity you wish to uphold. Many people make social media mistakes that could elicit an adverse effect on your brand. Many artists, Dj's, and actors hire publicists or managers to assist with consultation once they make it tt a certain point in their career.

Branding Yourself on Instagram

Instagram is becoming one of the most popular social media platforms for sharing pictures and videos. Similar to Facebook (who actually purchased Instagram), advertisers are now able to pay for sponsored ads to pop up on the pages (timeline) of regular instagramers. Your timeline should reflect a positive brand for you to be able to get the optimum usage for this tool. As mentioned earlier, many errors are made often when users post content to social media.

A simple mistake that is made is when users do not post enough content. Posting content keeps your page and your brand relevant, and it increases overall traffic to your site. Think of your page as your own tv station. Give the viewers something to constantly tune in to. This is how loyal followers take part in your journey.  On a flip side, posting too much content can be overwhelming to your viewers. You never want to feel like your spamming your audience with your mixtape single, or new blog site you want everyone to tune into.

Another obvious "no no" is posting irrelevant or inappropriate content. Although you are free to post whatever you like most of the times, try to narrow your post to give viewers only what they need to see in order to maintain a positive brand image. "An example would be if you were to be building your brand as celebrity fashion stylist / blogger. Post positive content relating to your love for the art, style, and culture. Its nothing wrong with revealing positive or motivating events in your life. On the flip, as a fashion blogger, it may not be wise to post ILP Video fight  to your Instagram page. Some viewers may not mind, however some of the followers that viewed your brand as positive and no nonsense may see that as unprofessional". This should also be considered before you post a negative remark about somebody, or before you engage in any form of social media conflicts. Again on the flip side, if you are an entertainer such as Gucci Mane Laflare, and you are trying to maintain a brand as a "Goon" or "bully" you may feel that this is apart of your brand and thus engage in these types of acts.

Tips To Improve Your Brand on Instagram

1. Post only nice pictures. Sometimes we get caught up in rushing to take spur of the moment pictures and post non quality photos. Do not do this! Quantity over quantity, even if it is the president of the County. Also, take pictures that tell stories. One artist that follows this rule is Lil Thony from Atlanta, Ga.

2. Post consistently, but do not overdue it. I recommend 5 posts per day. This is enough to entertain, but not flood your fans. You never want to look like a salesman or spammer. Some individuals such as TBABY Queen of mean Nuradio Station, and Dj Tokars (Mayor of The Streets) actually get paid to post content, and thus is required to post more than the average user, however I would not recommend this to the average user.

3. Use apps to create better photos. Apps such as photogrid, and flipagram are great for enhancing the moment. Dont be afraid to try using filters when posting pictures. Images are HUGE when it comes to branding. Before you post a pic, crop the photos, add text, add music, and do whatever necessary to maximize your post. Compare your profile page to that of someone you admire in your industry and adjust accordingly. I encourage musicians to get creative and use music, or video promos when releasing new music.

4. For videos, I suggest cropping to get the fit you desire. I also encourage using widescreen mode for promotion. Sometimes, it even helps to crop your videos and images so that you can have white or colored borders surrounding your pictures. Especially used by publicist and brand strategist, sometimes having white space between your posts makes your timeline look less saturated. Although your page will show one post at a time, once you have built a collage look at your entire page as a whole and find a way to improve.

5. Make great use of hashtags. When you post a picture or video, use relevant hashtags to attract new followers of similar interests and backgrounds. For instance, if you are an artist, use hashtags such as (singlerelease, musicvideo, mtv, xxl, sohhdotcom, atlanticrecords) to attract more visitors to view your profile. Copy and paste other users hashtags to simplify this process.

Summary

Overall, branding is an every day challenge for every business. No one is perfect, so there are always new tools and resources available to help us improve. Consider the image you wish to maintain when branding yourself. Most of you all have to be your own publicist, so always be brand conscience. Remember that your brand influences business traffic, and the value of your product or service. Companies such as Defient Ent, Bamconcepts LLC, and J Dubs Production are here to assist with branding needs.
